Beira, restoring the pride once she had.

Beira Lake

Beira Lake is in the heart of the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The lake is surrounded by many important businesses in the city. It occupied approximately 165 hectares of land 100 years ago and has been reduced to mere 65 hectares today due to various reasons. During the colonial era of the Portugese, and the English the lake was used to transport goods within the city. The lake was originally built before the colonization of the country and connected to many intricate canals providing easy way of transporting goods within the city and suburban cities.

During the Colonial era the sight of Beira Lake was a jewel to the Colombo City. But as the time passed by the lake got polluted due to human actions. The lake got filled with waste and the maintenance became abysmal. When it came to 90s the lake became a place where everyone tried to avoid due to the fowl smell of it. But today as movements made by the Urban Development Authority, the Beira Lake is getting a new life. The bio-diversity once it had is getting restored gradually and from most of the parts waste got cleared.

We hope that this initiative would be a utter success and we would be able to see the Beira Lake with the beauty and grandeur it had during early days.

For A Greener Future

For A Greener Colombo.

Today in Sri Lanka we could see how environmental pollution is affecting each and every part of the country. Today I saw a children's playground in Colombo which I used to go to play cricket as a small kid and the present scenario of that ground was heartbreaking to see. There were no kids playing. Half of the ground was filled with waste, and you can't even go near that ground without closing your nose.

As the city of Colombo develops we could see that the amount of waste produced by the city is also rising due to the facts like unnecessary usage of products because of the fact that needs and necessities of the citizens are growing bigger day by day. But someday if this keeps on going the whole city is going to be a garbage dump. Most of the citizens in Colombo area might have seen the Bluemandel landfill. I don't think any person who's living in Colombo wants to see more landfills like that in the city. As a citizen I don't want to see any.

Environmental pollution is one of the main problems that every living being on earth is facing after the industrial revolution. Though there were many suggested solutions to prevent environmental pollution, today we know that it is not something that we could do in a day or two. Pollution caused by waste is one of the major problems in almost every country. When it comes to developing countries it is much worse. We must try to prevent this by making a change in our attitudes as everything cannot be done through rules and regulations. Wish to see a greener Colombo for our future generations.

Making Electricity from Waste

Electricity to be Generated from Colombo's Waste

The World Bank’s private-sector financing arm is considering $9 million in debt and equity funding for a project in Sri Lanka that will sell electricity produced from burning municipal waste.A private company won a 25-year contract to build and operate a 10-megawatt plant in the Western Province, according to a summary of the proposed funding on the International Finance Corp.’s website.

The $29 million project will be able to incinerate as much as 580 metric tons a day of solid municipal waste. Japanese technology will be used for the project and the electricity will be sold to the Ceylon Electricity Board. We hope that this would become a successful project as it not only clears waste from the city but also gives a alternative energy source to the citizens.
